NEWBERRY — Residents and visitors alike will welcome in fall in downtown Newberry on Saturday with Oktoberfest.
The annual October event will kick off from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the heart of downtown.
Vendors and events will line Main Street for the day.
At the end near Nance Street, there will be a classic car show and in front of the Opera House the guild will host a beer garden that will feature the 2012 Paulaner Oktoberfest beer. This is the first year the beer has been available in the United States.
There will also be entertainment on the main stage in Memorial Park at the Opera House.
Around the square will be food, vendors and the judging of the liver nips contest. Liver nips came to Newberry from the Germans that founded the county and contestants will be competing with family recipes.
On Caldwell Street there will be a cooking stage where favorites are prepared by local chefs.
Along most of Main Street vendors will line the road and there will also be vendors around the courthouse parking lot.
Further up Main Street there will be more food vendors, a large Humane Society display, and inflatables and other children’s activities.
Some 65 vendors have signed up for the event and include everything from businesses to nonprofits to crafts and others, according to City of Newberry Parks, Recreation and Tourism Coordinator Bryan Bedenbaugh.
“It is almost so big that it can’t be contained in downtown,” said Bedenbaugh.
Last year the October event brought in an estimated 16,000 people to downtown Newberry.
