PROSPERITY — It’s lights, camera, action time at Mid-Carolina High as members of the drama club showcase their acting talent Friday and Saturday night.
This is the drama club’s second play of the year but the cast is more intimate and also directed by senior Holly Richardson.
The cast is performing The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, which is something that the students wanted to perform.
“They came up with this play to perform on their own,” said Drama Club sponsor and English teacher Jessica Stalker. “It’s taught in some of their classes.”
Stalker said the students have really led the way and put forth much effort toward this production. She added that teacher Johnny Marlowe has helped the students with their acting as well.
“They have really taken charge with getting together and memorizing lines,” she said, adding that they have full lines and full acts to memorize.
Richardson has been involved with the Drama Club since it began during her sophomore year and hopes that it continues.
“I like the fine arts and expressing myself,” said Richardson.
“The teachers let me have a lot of control and the students feel comfortable around me,” she said of directing. “I’m really excited (about this play.) I’d really like the fine arts to be established more in Newberry.”
Richardson wants to continue acting even into college as she prepares for Winthrop upon graduating.
In this production, Richardson is one of two seniors involved. Kayla Murphy, president of the Drama Club, and Yarelie Mitchell are actresses in the play.
Stalker explained that the play is 80 percent Oscar Wilde but it has been slightly modernized.
Show times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Mid-Carolina High School.
