FCA raises funds through golf

They are about the only way that religion can get into the local schools and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes are working to continue their efforts.

The group works through coaches and athletes to share their message with the local schools.

In addition to the clubs in schools, the group also send youth to athletic and leadership camps, said FCA spokesman Robert Smith.

They also give each coach a Bible and Bibles to any student that asks for one, said Smith.

The local group is active in the middle schools and up.

Through huddle meetings that include refreshments they start to teach athletes about God.

The group also takes students to a Clemson game that includes a ticket to the game, T-shirt and lunch. The trip costs each of the 6,500 students that attend just $10.

But the club only has one fund raiser to get money to spend each year on the students and that is through a golf tournament.

This year’s Newberry County FCA Booster Club golf tournament will be at Mid-Carolina Golf Club on Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m. Check in will start at noon and will include lunch.

All the proceeds will stay in Newberry County.

There are many ways to contribute to the fund raising event, says Smith.

The first to to put a team in the event with a cost of $260 a team or $65 per player.

The deadline to enter is Friday and limited to the first 32 teams.

Also major sponsorships are available for $1,000.

Tee box sponsorships are also available for $100 and come with a sign at the box.

Smith adds that all donations even just a few dollars helps the cause and are welcomed. If fact one person has given the group a billboard to promote the tournament.

Little Mountain Boy Scout Troop 61, sponsored by the Ruritan Club, is proud to announce that Michael Allen Morris completed his Board of Review on Dec. 12, and has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Morris’ rank advancement was celebrated by family, friends and fellow Scouts at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on April 143 at Macedonia Church. Michael is the 16 year old son of Kathy and Terry Morris of Prosperity and has been a member of Troop 61 since 2007. 2012 was the 100th Anniversary of the Eagle Scout and a special Eagle Rank was presented to Michael to commemorate this benchmark. Michael will be attending the National Jamboree at The Summit Bechtel Scouting Reserve in West Virginia in July along with 2 other scouts from Troop 61. For his Eagle Scout service project, Michael provided the leadership for, planned, secured funds for and organized the replacement of decorative landscaping at the Ruritan Building in Little Mountain. Pictured with Michael and his parents are Billy Lindler, Scoutmaster; Chad Morris, Andy Senn, Jeff Waters, Jeff Murray, Assistant Scoutmasters, and James Torrence, Committee Chairman.
