NEWBERRY — Several Newberry College students took part in local observances of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Jan. 21.
Nursing students Karen Johnson, Kristen Snowdeal and Abby Anderson participated in a Health and Safety Carnival sponsored by Midlands Technical College, Benedict College and Grace Christian Church. The carnival, meant to provide free services to raise health and safety awareness, drew about 60 guests. The Newberry nursing students provided blood pressure checks and tips on living a healthy lifestyle.
“So many people think of nurses as just in hospitals, but they play a vital role in community health,” Anderson says. “Fairs like this one help people who may not be able to get to the doctor get an idea about their health and ways to make lifestyle changes.”
Another event held Jan. 21 was a march in Newberry from Miller Chapel A.M.E. Church to Bethlehem Baptist Church. There, a program was presented by Dr. Charles E. Young of Union A.M.C. Church in Sumter. This service focused on King’s legacy.
Newberry College Americorps VISTA volunteer Amanda McSwine attended both the health carnival and the memorial service, and says these forms of service are the best way to honor the memory of King.
“Service is required to make you a well-rounded individual, and you can learn a lot about yourself that you wouldn’t be able to learn in a classroom,” she says.
