NEWBERRY COUNTY — A group of Newberry High seniors have a mission to complete: They are going to make senior citizens across Newberry County feel a little less lonely and more appreciated this Christmas.
The second Secret Seniors for Santa project has kicked off Monday and runs through Dec. 18. The event is a special side project brought forth by the Living Water Foundation in Newberry.
Renee Martin with Living Water says they have around 50 names collected from the Council on Aging and also recommended by other people which they add on as names are taken off.
The Christmas tree and drop off box is located at Wendy’s on Main Street in Newberry and people may pick up an ornament which features the first name only and a recommended gift item.
The secret Santas drop off their gift in the box at Wendy’s and everyday, one of senior volunteers from the high school will check on the box and collect gifts to bring back to the high school.
Gifts can be brought through Dec. 18 and the seniors will help deliver gifts with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Officers and other volunteers to the chosen senior citizens.
The seniors will also be raising awareness and donations for gifts and gift supplies that might be needed.
They can be seen at Newberry High basketball games, in the Newberry Christmas parade on Saturday and around campus donning a Santa hat or Secret Santa for Seniors pin.
Newberry High senior Jamie Fulmer is excited about the project under way: “It’s a really cool way to give back. Not much is done for the elderly and it’s a way to bridge the gap between the young and old.”
She’s excited to delivering gifts too, despite the fact that the delivery is at the start of their winter break.
“I’m looking forward to it a lot,” says Fulmer. “It’s cool to see them personally. We’re just raising awareness at basketball games, at school.”
