NEWBERRY — Newberry police charged a number of people during their holiday traffic campaign.

Newberry police will joined forces with the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Newberry County Sheriff’s Office in an effort to deter reckless and impaired driving over the holidays.The campaign started in mid-December and continued through Tuesday.

Infractions the officers looked for included speeding, seat belt and child restraint violations utilizing highway safety checkpoints and saturated patrols in various locations in the city limits of Newberry, according to Newberry Police Sgt. Chuck Rogers.

Rogers added there was only one arrest for driving under the influence during the two week campaign.

Before the campaign started the Newberry Police Department had made 29 arrests for driving under the influence and 97 arrests for driving under suspension.

During the campaign 13 were charged with driving under suspension, 12 for open containers, 14 for not having a S.C. drivers license, 45 tickets were given for speeding or driving too fast for conditions, three were charged with disregarding a stop sign, eight were ticketed for operating uninsured motor vehicle, seven for seat belt violations, 14 tickets were given for child restraint violations and seven charges were made for drug possession violations.

There were also five charges made for public intoxication, 26 with drivers license violations, 14 for vehicle violations and 23 for other moving violations.

Also police were able to make a number of weapon violation charges with one person charged with having a concealed weapon, two for carrying a pistol unlawfully and two for carrying a pistol by a convicted felon.

The officers conducted the traffic patrols on Main, Glenn, Nance, Pope, Johnstone, Drayton, Vincent, O’Neal, College Evan, Harrington and Boundary streets and Wilson and Smith roads, S.C. highways 34 and 121 and other roads in the city, said Rogers.
