BRISTOL, Tenn. — Pins from Jeff Vesta and Matt Wade plus a technical fall by B.J. Young helped propel the fourth-ranked Newberry College Wolves to a 29-9 win over the King University Tornado at the Student Center Complex on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Wolves move to 16-2 in duals action this season and will host the Newberry Open on Saturday. The Wolves’ next dual action comes on Monday at Belmont Abbey.
No. 5 Vesta continued a dominant roll to open the dual at 125-pounds, pinning Jerrell McCabe at the 1:15 mark of the first period to put the Wolves up 6-0. The win is Vesta’s 12th pinfall of the season and sixth in the last eight matches. Nick Lankford lost an 11-4 decision to Colin Crume to allow the Tornado back within 6-3.
No. 8 Young was never challenged by Marcelle McCabe in the 141-pounds bout, cruising to a 16-0 technical fall win just 20 seconds into the third period to make it an 11-3 lead. No. 7 Deral Brown took a 5-2 decision over Nic Stella at 149 pounds to push the lead to 13-3.
At 157 pounds, No. 5 Taylor Knapp eked out a 2-1 decision over Jeremy Miller before No. 5 Blake Ridenour took a 5-0 decision over John Austin Jones at 165-pounds to give Newberry a 19-3 lead.
The Tornado took a pair of decisions in the next two bouts, with Dyvon Passmore defeating Joe Pittman by a 12-9 decision at 174 pounds and Brandon Tressler took a 5-2 decision over Jared Holliday at 184 pounds to cut the lead to 19-9.
Joey Grisko sealed the dual win for the Wolves with an 8-1 decision over Cody Davis at 197 pounds to make it 22-9.
Wade trailed through most of the early stages of the heavyweight bout, but turned things on in the third period, fighting his way to a pin of Garrett Fosdyck at the 6:06 mark to put an emphatic stamp on the Wolves’ win.
