Newberry is magical

When you think about Newberry, what are your thoughts? I mean, as you look at the city, what do you see?

I came through Newberry over seven years ago, and I can vividly remember driving down College Street, passing Newberry College and proceeding all the way to the Zack Wright house. We drove around town and marveled at the gorgeous homes. My wife and I were truly impressed and then we started meeting the people. We were blown away by the friendliness of Newberry residents. We stopped and asked a mail lady, who was on her mail route, for directions. She was equally friendly and offered her knowledge willingly. We called Hometown Realty and who answered but Mr. Glenn Whitesides. He quickly offered to drive us around town and provided us with a history lesson about this wonderful little city.

Looking back, I believe we were sold within an hour of arriving. Our initial thoughts about this special place have grown since our first visit, and every day we are convinced we moved to one of the great places in America. We are convinced that Newberry has that something special to make it such a great place.

So, what is it about Newberry that just grabs you by the heart and will not let go? One could argue it is our Opera House, some might say it’s the people, or the climate. Maybe it is because we feel safe here, or is it the fine dining? I believe it is the combination of all these.

During the last two weeks we have had an increase in traffic coming through your Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center. Our visitors tell us they are amazed at our city.

First of all, they love the fact that they can park free anywhere in the city and they always comment on our stately old homes, the quaint shops, and cannot believe how welcoming everyone seems to be. So what brings them here? Whether it is our fantastic offerings at the Opera House, our Orchid Nursery, visiting family members, or just traveling down the Interstate and seeing one of our large billboards telling everyone to “Visit Historic Newberry,” it does not matter. We are happy to welcome each one.

So, let me ask you again, when you look at Newberry, what do you see? I can tell you our visitors frequently say, “What you have here is magical.” I can only hope and pray that you realize what you have here. Let’s all promise to work together and tell the world we truly are, “The city of friendly folks.”

Call the Chamber and allow Liz, Michelle, or me to explain how you might join the Newberry County Chamber of Commerce and get involved to help make Newberry County a place of destination. Call (803) 276-4274.
