Mating Rituals

I’ve never been one for writing in verse.

As an art form, at times, it seems a bit terse.

But the topic of love is so inspiring

I decided to write of my heart’s desiring.

Once again in the throes of online dating,

I find myself caught in the rituals of mating.

The online profiles and photos are ample,

It’s like Valentine’s Day with too many chocolates to sample.

I like the looks of one but his profile’s too sparse.

That one can write but looks like a horse’s arse.

I’m ashamed to admit I’ve become so judgemental,

But that one certainly needs all things dental.

This one’s too short, that one’s too tall.

How in the world will I choose from them all?

The process is certainly not scientific.

You just have to leap into the midst of the thicket.

So you pick one aspect on which to focus.

Maybe at first it might be just locus.

Distance to drive is certainly to be factored,

Otherwise, as the Aussies say, you’ll always be knackered.

Common interests and values are certainly key

But where’s the chemistry if he’s too much like me?

After days of fruitless scrolling the screen,

I spy one or two that make my eyes gleam.

With much trepidation, I send each a “wink.”

Hoping my powers of perception don’t stink.

It occurs to me later when I get no reply,

Men think the same way---oh my.

Even now they are out there scanning my face and body

Muttering to themselves, “ She’s certainly no hottie.”

I guess the term “meat market” still applies

And the best way to meet is to see with your eyes..

That special person across a crowded room

The one that makes your heart go “boom.”

But until that happens some future day

Online dating is here to stay.
