NEWBERRY — A resolution was announced last week to honor a major for his accomplishments.

The Newberry County Council enacted a resolution honoring Newberry County Sheriff’s Office Major Todd Johnson for receiving the Strom Thurmond Award.

Johnson was recently awarded the Strom Thurmond Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement by the state.

The award was established in 1983 by Thurmond to recognize officers, whose performance demonstrates the highest ideals for the law enforcement professional.

The winners of the award are selected by workers for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Strom Thurmond Foundation, the FBI and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

There have been four office from Newberry County in addition to Johnson that have been presented with the prestigious award. They are Sheriff Lee Foster, retired Newberry Police Captain Chuck Counts, Newberry Police Chief Jackie Swindler and retired Newberry Police Chief Andrew Shealy.

Johnson started his career in law enforcement with the Whitmire Police Department and in 1994 went to work for the Sheriff’s Office.
