NEWBERRY — Newberry Academy returned to the court last week, opening their varsity basketball schedule with a trip to Spartanburg Friday night and hosting a game at Newberry College on Saturday.
Unfortunately, the varsity teams were unable to pick up a win.
On Friday night, the boys lost to Spartanburg Christian Academy 73 – 33, and the girls’ team lost, 44–16.
On Saturday, only the boys played, and they continued to struggle, losing to Myrtle Beach Christian Academy 66–41.
The Lady Eagles game on Friday night was a tough match-up because Newberry was missing two players, and a third was ill and unable to compete for portions of the game.
Despite being short-handed, the Lady Eagles were only down by 10 at the half.
Spartanburg Christian pulled away in the second half, out rebounding the visiting team and forcing turnovers.
The Lady Eagles were led by Leigha Harbert and Andie Getz, with six points each. Emma Lindsay and Kaitlyn Nobles each had three points, and Carman Franklin finished with two points.
The boys’ team faced a powerful Spartanburg Christian team on Friday night, and struggled offensively throughout the game.
Dylan Skipper was the main offensive threat for Newberry, and he finished with 17 points.
On Saturday, the Eagles faced the Myrtle Beach Christian Academy Saints.
The Saints shot well most of the game and Newberry could not find consistent scoring. The Eagles found themselves in an early hole, down 24–9 after one period.
Newberry played pretty well in the second period, outscoring the visiting Saints and closing the halftime gap to nine points.
The second half belonged to the Saints, and Newberry never mustered a challenge.
The Eagles had two players in double figures. Jacob Epting finished with 14 points and Skipper finished with 12. Justin Suber added nine points, and Luke Carraway had five points on the night. Jake Buzhardt had a point.
Newberry Academy hosted Richard Winn Tuesday.
