Bulldogs sweep away Eagles in hoops

NEWBERRY — The 2012-13 Newberry High varsity basketball teams opened their seasons in fine form Tuesday evening in the Scott Gym with a sweep of Chapin High.

The Lady Bulldogs led after the end of each quarter as they would have a 53-45 victory at the final buzzer.

Fatima Sims led the Newberry scoring with 15 points.

Arnasia Boyd had 14 points while Tyshira Bates also ended the night in double digits with 13 points.

Sims, Boyd and Bates scored in each of the four quarters of play.

Also scoring for Newberry were Breanna Mathis and Shidedria Maybin who each four points, Alia Hunter scored two points while the Newberry scoring ended with a lone free throw from Octavia Grandy.

A 31-4 second quarter run by Newberry as well as winning the bench scoring 36-8 led the Bulldog boys to a 76-47 victory in the night cap.

Trey Miller was the lone Bulldog in double digit scoring as he finished with 15 points.

Jeremy Summers finished with nine points while Jalin Alexander and Notorious Booker each scored seven points.

Trey Gary and Dominique Gilmore contributed six points apiece while Kaheem Praylow and Tovaris Cureten each scored five points.

Bennett Wilson, Jimmy Willingham, Greely Saddler and Requon Davenport finished with four points each to round out the Newberry scoring.

Newberry will host Spartanburg this Friday.

During the halftime of the girls game, the members of last season’s AA upper-state championship boys basketball team were each presented with watches commemorating that accomplishment.
