NEWBERRY — Joy to the World rang out and the date 12-12-12 will be fondly remembered as 53 Newberry College graduates walked down the aisle on Wednesday.
In his greeting Newberry College Board Chair Hugo Pearce told the graduates that their families and friends were “prouder of you than they can ever be able to express. Welcome to your first day of the rest of your life as a Newberry College graduate.”
President Maurice Scherrens told the class they will always remember how they spent 12-12-12.
The graduate address was given by Newberry College alumni and professor Dr. Peggy Winder.
She gave the students three suggestions to improve their success.
The first was to never stop learning.
She said to be successful that learning is essential.
“Learning adds depth to our lives,” said Winder, “the more we learn the more we will be able to make connections between the dots and to be more creative.”
The second bit of advice is to not be afraid to take risk.
“Life itself is a risk,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to take a chance. Life is to short to wonder what if.”
The final suggestion was for the students to never forget where they came from and she asked them to reflect on the past few years and compare where they were to where they are now.
“Never take anything or anyone for granted,” she said. “God is the God of no mistakes and there was a reason you were at Newberry College.”
She told the students the college’s staff has hand a hand in molding them and to come back to the school for ballgames, recitals, plays and even Dopey’s hamburgers.
“Today we celebrate you and your accomplishments. Strive to make a difference in the lives of others,” was Winder’s final words of wisdom to the graduates.
Scherrens told the graduates that each of them had a special story and that Newberry College graduates have carried their stories about the world.
He added the day was special to him because it was is first graduation as president of the school.
“Go with God’s blessings…” he concluded.
