Supporting his staff in the reserves and those serving the country comes naturally for Sheriff Lee Foster.

In the past years, Foster and his office have supported Deputy Wesley Palmore on two deployments.

He also supported the 218 as they headed out to serve the country.

But when information came about the Sheriff’s Office being nominated for the 2009 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, he felt like his department didn’t have a chance against much bigger companies in the state and nation.

But last week the Sheriff’s Office was named as one of three South Carolina employers that made it as semi-finalist for the award.

“I am shocked,“ said Foster. “I hope we win, but I didn’t do it for the recognition, I did it because it is the right thing to do as an employer and for the troops. The most important thing is they all came back.“

The award is the U.S. government’s highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the guard and reserve. The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is significant because only members of the National Guard and Reserve or their family members are eligible to nominate their employers for the award.

Palmore, who is a school resource officer, nominated the local Sheriff’s Office.

The other two semi-finalists from the state are Consolidated Electric Distributor and the Cliffs Communities, Inc.

The local Sheriff’s Office is among 131 semi-finalists from across the nation.

The selection process began with more than 3,200 nominations submitted by National Guard and Reserve members or their families for outstanding employer support.

From this field of 131 companies, a national review board will select 35 finalists for the award.

A national selection board comprised of senior defense officials and business leaders will then select the award’s 15 recipients. The Department of Defense will announce the 2009 finalists in June and the award recipients in July.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., Sept.17 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Center.

I had the pleasure of serving with Lt. Wesley Palmore as a school safety officer, and the Sheriff's Office. Wesley distinguished himself during his two tours of duty, going above and beyond his call of duty, much as he does in his service to his county. I know full well the support that Sheriff Foster and his office gave to Wesley and would give to any others who were called in service. It is fitting that both Wesley and the Sheriff's Office be considered for this recognition.
