ERIE, Pa. — The Newberry Wolves are ranked as the second team in Super Region I in the 2012-13 season’s final rankings, which were released Monday morning. The Wolves are once again the only team in the region with a wrestler in the top six of all 10 weight classes.

Newberry has an 18-2 dual record entering Wednesday’s season finale against Anderson at 7 p.m. in Eleazer Arena. A win would give the Wolves the second most wins in a season in the program’s eight years as a Division II program.

In the team standings, Newberry finds itself only behind Pittsburgh-Johnstown, who won the matchup in the Super Region I Duals on Feb. 25. The NCAA Division II Super Region I Tournament will take place in Kutztown, Pa., on Feb. 22-23, with the top four wrestlers in each weight class advancing to the NCAA Division II National Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., on March 8-9.

Jeff Vesta at 125 pounds and Deral Brown at 149 pounds are ranked first in the region in their weight class after putting exclamation points on fantastic seasons and careers in last week’s wins over Belmont Abbey and UNC Pembroke.

Vesta became the Division II national leader in pinfalls, recording his 14th pin of wrestlers from all divisions and 12th pin of Division II wrestlers. He carries a 30-5 record in his first season at Newberry and has won 14 of his last 15 bouts, with nine of those victories coming via pin. Counting his time wrestling at Neosho County CC in Kansas, the redshirt junior now has a 102-30 career record.

Brown moved in to second in the Newberry record books in career wins, now holding a career record of 134-44. He has a 32-5 record in his redshirt senior season with two pinfalls, a technical fall and 13 major decisions. His 36 career major decisions is by far and away the most in school history, 15 more than the nearest wrestler in the record book.

The 157-pounder Taylor Knapp is ranked second in the region in his weight class. The 2012 All-American has a 22-5 record this season with nine wins by fall and two wins by major decision. His last four wins have been bonus point wins.

Five Wolves are ranked third regionally in their weight class - B.J. Young at 141-pounds, Blake Ridenour at 165-pounds, Travis Sheehy at 174-pounds, Mitch Brown at 184-pounds and Joey Grisko at 197-pounds.

Young has a 29-8 record on the season with nine wins by pinfall, five wins by technical fall and four wins by major decision. The two-time national runner-up now holds a career record of 96-26.

Ridenour has a 24-8 record on the year with five wins by pinfall and three wins by major decision. Sheehy is approaching a career milestone as well with 94 career wins. He has a 25-6 record this season with six wins by fall, two wins by technical fall and five wins by major decision.

Mitch Brown has a career record of 89-37 and has had his best season of his collegiate career with a 27-9 record including seven wins by fall, a win by technical fall and four wins by major decision. He was champion of the Braves Classic and Newberry Open and finished in second at the King Open. Grisko has a season record of 21-9 with three wins by fall and a win by major decision and is currently on a five-match winning streak.

The 133-pounder Nick Lankford and heavyweight Matt Wade are each ranked sixth in the region in their weight class.

In his first collegiate season, Lankford has a 21-9 record with 10 wins by pinfall and a technical fall victory. He was the runner-up at the Newberry Open earlier this month. Wade has a 16-6 season record with five wins by fall and two wins by major decision.
