INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The Newberry College Wolves football team is ranked ninth in the initial NCAA Division II Super Region II rankings, as released Monday. These rankings determine which teams will qualify for the NCAA Division II Playoffs in November.
Newberry (5-3) appears in the rankings for the first time since Oct. 5, 2009. The top six teams in each of the four Super Regions at the end of the season earn a berth to the playoffs.
The Wolves are one of five teams in the highly competitive South Atlantic Conference to appear in the top 10 in the region, which is comprised of the SAC, the Gulf South Conference, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and independents UNC Pembroke and North Greenville.
Miles (Ala.) holds the top spot in the poll, followed by Mars Hill, West Alabama, Valdosta State, Carson-Newman, Fort Valley State, Lenoir-Rhyne, Wingate, Newberry and Albany State. Of the five SAC teams ranked, Newberry still has Lenoir-Rhyne to face in the final three weeks.
To climb in the rankings, Newberry must continue to win and follow up on the momentum from last week’s 31-17 win over Tusculum. The Wolves travel to UNC Pembroke this week, host Lenoir-Rhyne on Nov. 3 and travel to Brevard to close the regular season on Nov. 10.
