Wolves ranked fourth nationally

NEWBERRY — After a 4-1 weekend at the Super Region I Duals, the Newberry Wolves remained at fourth in the national coaches’ poll, but fell to second in the Super Region.

Newberry is 15-2 in duals action. The Wolves are once again the only team in the region with a wrestler in the top six of each weight class.

Three Newberry wrestlers are ranked fifth in the nation in their weight class. Jeff Vesta in the 125 pound class is 27-5 on the season, ranked fifth in the nation and first in the region. Blake Ridenour is ranked fifth in the nation at 165 pounds and first in the region with a 23-7 record, and Taylor Knapp is ranked fifth in the nation and second in the region at 157 pounds with a 21-5 record.

Ranked seventh in the nation at 149-pounds is Deral Brown with a record setting season. He is also ranked first in the region and set a school record for major decisions in a season with his 12th last weekend. He extended his school record to 35 career major decisions. He is 29-5 on the season and has 127 career wins. He will tie Cy Wainwright for second in school history for career wins with one more victory.

Ranked eighth in the nation at 141 pounds is B.J. Young, who is approaching a milestone of his own. He is ranked third in the region in his class and now has 98 career wins entering Wednesday’s dual at King.

Three other Wolves wrestlers are ranked third in the region — Travis Sheehy at 174 pounds with a 25-7 record, Jared Holliday with a 12-5 record at 184 pounds and Joey Grisko at 197 pounds with a 19-9 record.

Newberry’s regionally ranked contingent is rounded out by two wrestlers ranked fifth in the region. Nick Lankford at 133 pounds has a 17-7 record and heavyweight Matt Wade has a 14-5 record.
