Wolves qualify for second straight NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS — The Newberry College Wolves’ volleyball team has qualified for the 2012 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championships as announced by the NCAA on Sunday night. Newberry will be the Southeast Region’s sixth seed.

Newberry (18-14) will face off against third-seeded Flagler College (22-10) to open the Southeast Regional at noon on Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Aquatics and Recreation Center on the campus of Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga.

This is Newberry’s second consecutive NCAA Tournament qualification after getting in the tournament as the seventh seed in 2011. The Wolves were swept by Flagler in the first round last year as well, with the Saints going on to win the Southeast Region.

Following Newberry/Flagler in the opening round will be second-seed Wingate against seventh-seed Lenoir-Rhyne at 2:30 p.m., fourth-seed Tusculum against fifth-seed Lincoln Memorial at 5 p.m. and top-seed Armstrong against eighth-seed Belmont Abbey at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s semifinal matches will be at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. with the Southeast Region championship match taking place at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, $3 for students with valid ID and $2 for children 12 and under for each day of action.

All seven matches will be available online via www.armstrongpirates.com with live stats and live webcasts.

The winner of Saturday’s region championship match advances to the 2012 NCAA Division II Volleyball Elite Eight in Pensacola, Fla., on Dec. 6-8.
