The 13th-ranked Newberry Wolves opened the 2012 NCAA Division II Fall Preview with a 318 Sunday to stand in ninth place after one round at the LPGA International Legends Course, the home of the 2013 national tournament.

“We got off to a rough start today, but we settled down and finished strong,” head coach Clarissa Childs said. “The course is playing pretty tough. The wind picked up on the back nine and the girls handled that pretty well. We’re ready for the second round tomorrow and we feel we can improve on today’s scores.”

Lisa Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany) is in a tie for ninth individually after a 3-over par 75. The top of the leaderboard is tightly packed and Brandl is just three strokes off of the lead. Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) shot a 6-over par 78 and is tied for 21st. Julia Daneshfar (Trophy Club, Texas) is tied for 40th after a 9-over par 81.

Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) is tied for 51st with a 12-over par 84 and Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) shot an 17-over par 89 to tie for 63rd. Competing as an individual, Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) is tied for 54th with a 13-over par 85.

In the team standings, the top five spots in the tournament are held by teams ranked in the top 10 in the GolfWeek coaches poll. No. 6 Lynn and No. 7 Barry are tied for the lead at 305, while No. 8 Central Oklahoma and No. 9 Saint Leo are two strokes back at 307. Second ranked Florida Southern is in fifth at 308.

Newberry is one of seven top 25 teams in this week’s event, which is held on the same course as the 2013 NCAA Division II National Tournament and the final stages of the LPGA’s qualifying school.

The Wolves tee off in Monday’s second round beginning at 9:40 a.m.
