The Newberry College men’s golf team sits in 11th place after the first round of the season opening Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate at the Sevierville Golf Course on Monday.
Newberry was led on the par 72, 6.994-yard course by Jon Weiss (Sumter), who sits in a tie for 23rd with a 3-over par 75. The Wolves shot a 306, 16 strokes back of leaders Columbus State and Belmont Abbey.
Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Tommy Hurst (Miami, Fla.) are in a tie for 31st with 4-over par 76. Layton Truax (Savannah, Ga.) is tied for 55th with a 7-over par 79 and Dixon Walker (Lexington) is tied for 71st with a 9-over par 81. Competing as an individual, John Paul Ferguson (Travelers Rest) is in 83rd with a 17-over par 89.
Play will conclude with a second round on Tuesday.
