WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High girls tennis team and their Coach Chaz Adams have racked up the accolades this season.
Recently Adams was named co-region coach of the year for girls tennis.
Sophomore Rebecca Glymph says, “We really appreciate Coach Adams. He is an excellent coach, really knows what he’s doing and has played competitively himself.”
However, Glymph and the rest of the team are looking pretty good as well. Three of his girls — DJ Norton, Haley Hughes and Glymph — made all-region, which is selected by the coaches of the region based on conference records and sportsmanship within those matches.
Norton is the No. 2 singles player (10-2 vs. region competition). Hughes is the No. 3 singles player (8-4 vs. region competition) and Glymph is the No. 5 Singles Player (10-2 vs. region competition). Norton’s only losses came from the same player from Abbeville and both matches went to third set tiebreakers.
Adams said, “DJ is one of, if not, the most competitive player on the team, and she showed it throughout the season, pulling off big victories week after week.”
Adams added, “Haley’s losses were also very close, hard-fought matches that could have gone either way; she showed a lot of heart and determination throughout the season against some very good No. 3 players.”
Adams states, “Rebecca played some of the best tennis I have ever seen her play this season, and she was huge in helping us win some big matches. Her losses were both matches that could have easily gone her way which shows that she was a very tough competitor for the other No. 5 singles players in the region. All three girls were instrumental in putting some big wins on the board for the Whitmire team against some very tough competition. I am very proud of all these girls and honored to be their coach and hope their success continues on into next season.”
