Whitmire Town Council want to get Whitmire back on the map and gain people’s interest.

At Monday’s regular council meeting, the council members only discussed areas that they would like to focus on to get the town looking presentable and have one person come in and spread the good word.

Council member Michael Thomas mentioned having the mural repainted on Main Street as well as having some buildings repainted.

The group discussed possibly having some students from the school help out as well as any fund raising to get some money rolling in.

Council member Dwight Lane also mentioned some painting and upkeep to the police department specifically with some counter top repairs and cosmetic changes to make the area look nicer.

Lane said it’s the simple things that can make a difference.

Council member Cassie Fowler agreed that the town needs some upkeep and painting to get people interested in the town.

The council members will keep this on their plate and come up with concrete plans and ideas to make downtown Whitmire more approachable and talked about more.

In recreation news, midget, mite and tackle football along with cheerleading registration is ongoing until Sept. 7.

Parents may register their children at town hall. The town’s recreation sports is for children ages 6 to 12.

As far as a part-time recreation director goes, the town has not hired someone; however, it was in their budget for the upcoming year so they are looking to find somebody to come on board.

The Hook-a-Kid on Golf tournament is Saturday and will be at the Whitmire Golf Course for the group of kids who participated in the summer golf program.

About 12 kids will be participating in the golf tournament in which Whitmire’s golf association will be assisting as well.
