Whitmire Jaycees honored at state convention

Hello everyone, lots of local news on the way, along with an early spring.

“Gottrocks the Birthday Fairy” is here on landing gear with the birthday list. F.Y.I., He recently had to get his flu shot, before he could make his rounds. Happy birthday wishes to “Mister”Arthur Green, Jimmy Brock, Jamie Ellison, Addie Green, David James, Will Raines, Kimberly Miller, Cole Eison, Loretta Willard, Clyde Tankersley, Dwight Lane, Charles Vanlue, Chris Keller, Judy R. Shealy, Cole Whitmire and Bella King.

In upcoming local events and people in the news

The Town of Whitmire’s State of the Town public meeting is 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Community Center. All Whitmire residents and Newberry, Laurens and Union County officials are encouraged to attend.

The First Baptist Church members will host their Valentine’s Day party in the fellowship hall 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10.

Evans Street Church of God pianist Marty Wilbanks reported that, “the recent end of January’s Otis Jennings’ famous Chicken Stew fundraiser brought in close to $800 for church programs and missions.”

The Whitmire Jaycees were recognized in multiple categories in the fourth quarter at the state Jaycees Convention in Columbia a week ago. The Whitmire chapter received honors for being the fifth chapter in the state rankings including: honorable mention for the candidates stump meeting last October, the Outstanding Local Individual Project for the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, honorable mention for the “Gospel in the Streets Night” at the 25th annual Party in the Pines the Festival in 2012 and the big finale was leader and longtime member Sue Hollingsworth being awarded the Ambassador Award. She became a member of the Jaycees Highest Honor Society, with a Triple Crown. The awards and honors are on the national level.

Several Whitmire Jaycees attended the convention. Sue and her husband Jimmy, son Matthew, Darlene Styles, Christianna Gilliam and Jason Mack. The Jaycees have fundraisers and community projects planned for the spring and summer. The upcoming Easter Egg hunt, the second Golf in the Pines tournament in April, Bake Sales and early festival planning meetings.

The group wants to offer a Coupon Clipping and Money Saving Workshop for citizens. Your feedback is needed. Do you think you would be interested in a workshop? Individuals, civic, church and school groups are welcome to attend the workshop. Comments can be made on their Group /organization Facebook page. New members and volunteers are welcome to attend the monthly meetings, held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m.
