One church community reminisced on Sunday with a 25-year time capsule celebration.

Mt. Pleasant U.M.C. opened a time capsule from 1987 that was buried in the ramp to the church along with an engraved stone that had the church name and years engraved upon it.

There was also a letter from the youth members of the church in the pastor’s study area along with an antiquated video tape.

The tape’s contents were actually transferred to a DVD because of the fragile state.

The idea was actually member Willie Morris’s idea to start the capsule who gathered items in 1987. The capsule was buried when the ramp was just being build and Morris thought that would a grand place for a time capsule.

The capsule is actually a part of a PVC piping and all the items were sealed although some didn’t quite make the journey.

Newspaper clippings and a picture of the church were captured in the capsule and Morris says that this was definitely an experiment.

They will do a better job for the next capsule of keeping the items safe from moisture.

In fact, she is asking church members to donate items for the capsule which will be for another 25 years starting with 2013. This one will be from 2013-2038.

The stone that was engraved for the 1987-2012 capsule will also have the years 2013-2038 engraved underneath it and built back into the brick ramp.

As for other items, there was also a letter from the youth of the church which Rev. Mat Brewington read. There were a couple of youth, who are now adults who are still members of the church.

Brewington is the new pastor of the church. However, in 1987, Rev. Paul Rogers was the pastor.

As for the video, clips from various church events were played back and members looked back at how much they have changed and much laughter and smiles were echoed throughout.

Laughter especially boomed during certain outtakes of candid video clips which only the church community could understand.

While this was definitely acknowledged as an experiment, it was still quite memorable and one in which the church may look forward to once again.
