ROCK HILL - Newberry College junior goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land) has been named the South Atlantic Conference’s Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Sweatt surrendered a goal on the first shot of Saturday’s match at Catawba, before turning away the next 12 shots the Indians placed on frame. Catawba tested Sweatt by taking 23 shots, including nine in the two overtime periods.
The 12 save performance by Sweatt helped Newberry secure a 1-1 draw at Catawba. Sweatt is currently second in the SAC in save percentage (.857) and goals against (five), while sitting at fourth in saves with 30.
Sweatt becomes the first Newberry men’s soccer player to be named SAC Player of the Week since Debola Ogunseye received the nod on Oct. 21, 2008.
The Wolves and Sweatt head to Wingate on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Bulldogs.
