NEWBERRY — Funeral services for Mrs. Surfina S. Carter, 96, will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at 1 p.m. at St. James A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Carter passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home. Born in Newberry County, she was the daughter of the late Sol Smith and the late Minnie Eichelberger Smith.

Mrs. Carter was a dedicated member of St. James A.M.E. Church where she was Mother of the Church, Treasurer of the Missionary and a Stewardess. She was also a member of Women’s Home Aide Society No. 46 and AP & B Society. Mrs. Carter was honored in May of 2004 as the Mother of Newberry County. She was a retired employee of the School District of Newberry.

Mrs. Carter was predeceased by her husband, Mr. Beamon Carter Sr.; sons, Beamon Carter, Jr., Thomas Carter and Roger “Butch” Carter; sister, Annie Gerany and sister-in-law, Thelma Smith; brothers, James S. Smith and John W. Smith.

Surviving are two daughters, Donna Carter (Joe) Maybin of Newberry; Ruth (Marion) Brown of Irmo; one son, Brisco (Carrie) Carter Sr. of Newberry; two sisters, Minnie Goodman of Newberry; Elizabeth Brooks of Prosperity; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at 4462 Dennis Dairy Road, Newberry, SC.
