NEWBERRY — Newberry Rotary celebrated students of the month again at their Friday afternoon meeting.
The four high schools, Mid-Carolina, Newberry, Newberry Academy and Whitmire plus the Newberry County Career Center praised the accomplishments of the seniors chosen for academics or athletics or a combinations of both plus character traits.
For Mid-Carolina, Dillon Pelton was chosen for his combination of athletics and academics.
Mid-Carolina High Principal Ray Cooper went down the list of Pelton’s achievements and accomplishments which include: all state and all region soccer plus playing soccer for the school, being the kicker for the football team, senior beta club and participating in the youth program at his church to name a few.
As for colleges, Pelton is looking at the College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina and Lander University.
For Newberry, Sloah Hazel was the recognized student of the month.
Newberry High Principal Katrina Singletary said that Hazel is a hopeful for the U.S. Naval Academy but his back up plan is The Citadel, which he has already been accepted to.
His activities include golf, wrestling, beta club, the National Technical Honor Society, YoungLife and being involved with his church, Silverstreet Lutheran.
For Whitmire Community, Breanna Lindler was selected as the school’s student of the month.
Whitmire Community Principal Joey Haney introduced the senior who is currently ranked first in her senior class. He also said she has a love for music and animals, is a USC-Union and USC-Upstate Junior Scholar, involved in senior beta club, color guard and in college she wants to major in medicine.
For Newberry Academy, Jake Buzhardt was introduced by the Academy’s Head of School Brian Fitzgerald as the school’s student of the month.
Buzhardt plays basketball, baseball and is a swim champion for the school and state and also runs in cross country.
He is also involved with student governments, Junior Civitans, yearbook and was a S.C. Lieutenant Governor winner for the district and also attended Palmetto Boys State.
He has also had the highest grade point average for two years in a row now.
For the Newberry County Career School, Director Buddy Livingston introduced Stephanie Long who is a Mid-Carolina student.
Long is a cosmetology student and Livingston said that cosmetology instructor Wanda Connelly said that Long is one of the most conscientious students she’s taught.
Long wants to become a nurse and is involved with her church Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran where she teaches Sunday school to preschoolers.
