The Newberry Rotary Club is helping to fight illiteracy book by book.
The service club has partnered with the Newberry Literacy Council’s summer program to provide books as well as bookcases to children.
The bookcases are to be built by the Newberry County Career Center students and Rotarians help to donate books as well as have people donate to fill the bookcases.
So far, president Melvin Evans said they have 150 books and 13 bookcases. The remaining bookcases will be built once the career center students return to school.
As for the books, Rotary is still pushing for people to donate books as well as encouraging Rotarians to get books for the children.
One Rotarian Debbie Hartness mentioned to her Sunday school class at Aveleigh Presbyterian that the club needed books and they gladly donated a good portion.
Evans said if anyone wishes to donate, they may just seek out a Rotarian or stop by the literacy council to see Barbara Chapman and say they want to donate books in Rotary’s name.
