Hello everyone. You ask what’s going on in Whitmire. Well, we’ll talk about that after we send out our birthday wishes from Gottrocks, the Birthday Fairy. Happy birthday to: Nina Grant, Micah Dickerson, Judy Farmer, Wayne Stewart, Jackie Lee, “Ginka” Garner, Tracy S. Bostic, Tonia Jeter, June Watkins, Kevin Boozer and Tracy Arrowood.

We send our happy anniversary wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Alexander, who recently celebrated their 33rd. The couple also celebrated the first birthday of their oldest grandson Ashton.

According to Janet, “We gave Ashton a cowboy theme party, where we all wore cowboy hats and drank punch from boot mugs.” She added, “It was done Whitmire style; a good time was had by all.”

We send our best feel good wishes to Annette Bullard and Lee Bradley.

On a sad note, we send our sympathy and best wishes to the families of Mrs. Pauline Nelson.

Upcoming events

In upcoming community events, former Whitmire residents the Reed brothers and the younger generation members of the Reed Family will be in town for the homecoming service at First Baptist Church on Sunday, Oct. 14.

According to Raymond, “We would love to see our friends and family members.” He added, “Cleland, Billy, Gerald, Wayne, Darrell and Ted will be here, along with Ted’s two sons Steven and Shannon will sing at the 11 a.m. service. Then after the luncheon, we hope to go back to the church and have a good old fashioned singing.” Raymond also said “Former Whitmire Native A. H. “Buster” Walker and his wife Glennie will be coming to the service, along with former Whitmire resident Mrs. Sarah McCall .”

Buster used to sing with the family members throughout the years. The Reed brothers were known for their exquisite harmony vocals. All generations of Reeds sing and play instruments. In the 1940s, the Reeds used to sing on live, local radio shows.

Recently the two longtime friends were a part of the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with over 80 other World War II Veterans. He said, “Guess who our guardian/sponsor was? Former Whitmire resident Mildred Suber.”

Both Raymond and Buster graduated from Whitmire High School in the 1940s. Wayne, Gerald, Darrell and Ted all graduated from Whitmire High School in the ’60s and ’70s.

Election season

It’s almost election time, and it sure came around fast didn’t it? The Whitmire Jaycees invite and encourage citizens to come to the first stump meeting at 6:30 p.m. at The Whitmire Community Center on Oct. 23.

Local Whitmire candidates and mayoral candidates and Newberry county candidates and official have been invited to speak and answer questions. This is your time to meet, and ask questions of the candidates you will be voting for. The public is encouraged to attend. Feel free to comment or ask questions on the Jaycees group organization Facebook page.

Halloween in Whitmire

Trick or treat night in Whitmire is Oct. 27 along with the annual Booster Club Halloween Carnival. The event will be in the city gym and the public tennis courts on Main Street.

There will be a Trunk or Treat out of the trunks of cars on Main Street. Kids and their parents can enjoy a stroll down Main Street, get a bag full of treats, then walk to the gym. Everything is in close proximity to Town Hall, and the city gym. The areas are well lit. The carnival will feature adult and kids costume contests, music, carnival style food and sweets. The ever popular Dunk-the-coach inflatable air rides and games on the tennis court next door to gym, carnival food, and soft drinks. This is a fund raiser for the athletic booster club.

Alright readers, I heard the Tinker Bell or was it the dinner bell? The Deadline Fairy is tapping his cell phone on my keys. Time is up; ready for press. We will see you next week, but in the meantime, send us your news and photos to : news2cassie@yahoo.com
