PROSPERITY — The Town of Prosperity held their last meeting of the year with a relatively brief agenda.

While there was no new business to be discussed, the council is preparing for next year’s Prosperity Hoppin’ festival.

According to the Town Administrator Karen Livingston, a committee has been formed and will meet to prepare the annual family festival.

The committee will discuss in more depth the idea of the Hoppin’ to be held in May instead of August. This wouldn’t be for 2013 though.

At last month’s meeting, the bulk pickup special rates were discussed but the idea is being tabled until January’s meeting, according to Livingston.

The bulk pickup is to be discussed in regards to resident’s large items left on the side of the road would be picked up for a special price. Items left on the side of the road tend to be from evictions or construction projects.

In recreation news, the S.C. Dixie Youth approached the Mid-Carolina board about their 2010 census report and the state of their franchise size.

Due to the 2010 Census report, the current franchise exceeds the limit for the Dixie Youth to maintain just one franchise.

The board did agree to vote to redraw the current lines, decreasing the population within the Mid-Carolina Dixie Youth franchise area. This would allow the MC franchise to stand as is.

Because of this, youth from outside the franchise boundaries may participate in the regular season play but they would not be available to play in the post season play for the All-stars.

It’s because of this decision made by the board that the Town of Prosperity voted to pursue a franchise with the S.C. Dixie Youth to serve all the children within the county that want to play Dixie Youth baseball, according to Livingston.

“We support the policy and core values of Dixie Youth baseball which is to promote the development of strong character, a right attitude, a sense of responsibility, and citizenship and want to provide these for all youth of our community,” Livingston stated.

As far as other events go in the new year, the flurry of Christmas activities have been played but town offices will be closed Jan. 1 for New Year’s and Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. day.

The next regularly scheduled town council meeting will be held Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
