Newberry College junior Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference volleyball Player of the Week for the season’s opening week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Parrish is Newberry’s first volleyball player of the week since Priscila Sales and Brianna Blakely won the award in October 2008. She had three double-doubles at the Francis Marion Invitational to lead Newberry to its first 4-0 start since 2007 and only the second such start for Newberry since joining the league in 1996.

She leads the conference with an average of 3.71 kills per set and recorded eight service aces to start the season. She also averages a team-high 3.36 digs, which is in the top 10 in the conference rankings entering tonight’s match against Lander.

Parrish was a preseason first team all-SAC pick after registering second team all-conference honors as a sophomore. She now has 823 career kills.
