The 11th John, Janet and Jazz concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Newberry Opera House.

The concert is presented by Dr. John Wagner, clarinetist and flutist, and professor of music emeritus at Newberry College, and his sister, Dr. Janet Wagner Elshazly, pianist and visiting professor of music at Charleston Southern University. Also appearing with Wagner and Elshazly will be violinist Rex Conner, a freelance musician and studio teacher in Charleston.

The first half of the program will consist of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee; Sonata No. 1 for Clarinet and Piano by Johann Wanhal, a contemporary of Mozart, and Suite for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano by the 20th-century French composer Darius Milhaud.

After a brief intermission, the remainder of the program will feature a selection of popular songs played in a jazz style by Wagner on clarinet and flute, assisted by Shawn Hair, piano; Jared Poole, bass, and Martin Giles, drums. Vocalist Millie Keefe Black will also be featured on several of these pieces. Black and Messrs, Hair, Poole and Giles all have ties to Newberry College.

Admission is free to this Sunday afternoon concert. A reception will follow where the audience may meet the musicians.
