NEWBERRY — Almost a year to the day after ground was broken on a new softball field for Newberry College, the team opened its season on the field Saturday afternoon.
A large crowd of fans came to the opening day game at the field on Smith Road.
The new field is part of a complex that will include baseball, softball and soccer fields.
During the ground breaking in February 2012, Acting President John Hudgens says that $400,000 had been given to complete the project.
“When I was here in the 1950s and I was on the baseball team, there was no field,” said Hudgens, adding the team played behind the high school. “This is a wonderful thing.”
The soccer and softball teams shared a facility since the late 1990s, with one corner of the soccer field being replaced each fall and then temporary fencing installed for softball season.
The corner had to be replanted each summer to be ready for each fall’s soccer season.
Fan and college supporter Jerry Chitty, Newberry Mayor Foster Senn and members of the Newberry City Council were all honored during the opening pitch as the college staff thanked each of them for their support.
