COLUMBIA — Two Newberry County high school marching bands placed at state championships on Saturday.

The Newberry High Blue Brigade and Mid-Carolina Rebel Regiment marching bands both competed in the AA State championships in Columbia at Spring Valley High School.

The finals consisted of 2A and 4A schools competing.

The Blue Brigade placed 16th and the first time that they have qualified for state championships since 2006, according to Akeem Downs, band director.

Downs is also new to the band coming onboard at the beginning of this school year.

The Rebel Regiment placed ninth and received a superior rating, according to Jed Thomas, band director at Mid-Carolina.

As for Whitmire’s Royal Regiment, they missed out on going to state finals by one placement.

According to Whitmire band director Rob Gunning, they made it to the Upper State 1A championships and placed seventh when they needed to place somewhere in the top six.

However, Whitmire had even less band members and a younger band this year but kept going and maintaining a positive attitude. After all, they do have awards and trophies to recognize their accomplishments.

While the football season and competitions are over, the marching bands are far from resting.

There are winter concerts, parades and many fund raiser sales that they must now pay attention to.
