The Bulldogs home is well on its way to receiving renovations on their home.
For anyone who has passed by the high school on Main Street, demolition is obviously under way.
The $2.6 million project for the high school started at the beginning of this summer and will continue through December or January.
The project is a 6-7 month project, according to Newberry County School District’s Assistant Superintendent for Operations and Administration Jim Suber.
There are a couple of phases for the construction project. The first phase includes the science lab, courtyard and theater area while the second phase includes the front entrance additions, renovations and canopies, according to Suber.
He adds that the construction project is progressing as planned.
Moving along
So far, demolition has broken through at the theater, science and front entrance, says Suber.
A breakdown of the projects that have been accomplished in the theater are as follows: theater seats removed, existing floor tile and carpet removed, floor layout in theater measured for new seating, theater wiring coming along and temporary doors and sidewalks have been installed.
In the science area, floor slabs have been poured, block walls are being built and the lab casework is in fabrication, according to Suber.
However, the temporary wall between the front entrance area and the cafeteria is finished, he says.
During the first phase, the focus is on the science labs and classrooms. However, since school begins Aug. 20 and construction will continue, there will be temporary spaces and entrances as needed.
Students, teachers and staff will enter through a temporary front entrance which will be labeled for the upcoming school year.
In the future
The only parking area that is affected that will not be available is the circle that is in front of the school.
This is where the front entrance renovation is taking place.
Most of the parking lots will be available once school starts and the lot by the gym and football field should be fine, according to Suber.
“We are excited about these renovations and additions to Newberry High School. Upon completion the students and staff will be in a much more secure environment while having access to state of the art science labs and classrooms,” says Suber, “In addition, the newly renovated theater which will feature new lighting, sound, projection, seating and stage flooring. (Principal Katrina) Singletary and her staff have been very involved in the planning process and have worked diligently with our entire design team to plan for the beginning of the new school year and to make this transition as smooth as possible.”
Security for the front entrance as well as security fencing in the quad area in between the main building and freshmen wing is the main scope of the construction project.
