More than half of all Newberry County students met the High School Assessment Program test standards with a competent level.
The HSAP scores for the 2011-12 school year was just released and 85.2 of all Newberry County students met the standard for the English/language arts while 78.4 of all Newberry County students met the standard for the math section.
Level two was the competent level or the level needed for students to pass. Level three and four were proficient and exceptional, respectively. Level one was the level in which standards were not met.
Students who met the exceptional level, or the highest level, for Newberry County students were slightly higher in the English section over the math section.
The majority of students were level two or three.
As for Mid-Carolina High students who met the standard, or level two level for HSAP, 89.3 percent of students met the standard in English while 84.8 percent of students met the standard in math.
At Newberry High, 81.2 percent of students met the standard in English, or level two for HSAP, and 73 percent of students met the standard in math.
At Whitmire High, 84.6 percent of students met the standard in English, or level two for HSAP, and 71.8 percent of students met the standard in math.
Public school students must pass both the HSAP English/language arts and math tests to meet the state’s exit examination requirement for a high school diploma.
The HSAP also satisfies the federal requirement to assess achievement in English and math.
The HSAP is initially administered to students in their second year of high school. Students have additional opportunities to retake any tests not passed.
Students must meet the state standard of a level two score or higher in order to meet the diploma requirement.
Students must score level three or higher to meet proficiency standards for federal accountability.
