WHITMIRE — Dr. Kimberly Neal, a math teacher at Whitmire Community School, has received a Lucile Cornetet Individual Award for professional development from The Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation.
This award enabled Neal to attend the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Myrtle Beach. Dr. Elsie Gross, chair of the Educational Foundation Board of Trustees, stated that the Foundation awards approximately $40,000 annually to outstanding educators to enable them to attend professional activities in their respective fields.
Neal presented a session at the South Carolina Council of Mathematics on Oct. 11 entitled Common Core In the high school classroom. The session provided an overview of the new Common Core State Standards in high school math along with activities and lessons that can be used in the classroom that correlate to the CCSS.
A bequest to The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International from the Lucile Cornetet estate was the basis for establishing the Lucile Cornetet Professional Development Fund in 2005. Cornetet, a long-time educator and society member in Ohio, died in 2001.
The educational foundation supports and encourages intercultural understanding and educational excellence.
Established in 1964, the foundation is a non-profit organization located in The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Headquarters in Austin, Texas. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, established in 1929, is an honor organization for women educators in 18 countries.
