Newberry College senior punter JoJo Morris (Lancaster) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the 2012 season’s opening week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.

Morris - a preseason second team all-SAC selection - had four punts in the 46-20 season opening win over Elizabeth City State on Saturday, averaging 47.75 yards per punt. That average leads the conference and is second in the nation in Division II. With ECSU’s total of 2 return yards, Newberry ranks fifth nationally in net punting at 46.5 yards. Morris had two punts over 50 yards and pinned ECSU inside its own 20 twice, with the Vikings having an average starting position of its own 25 for the game.

In 2011, Morris was the first Newberry punter to earn all-SAC honors since Jeff Williams was a second team honoree in 2004. In nine games, Morris averaged 40.3 yards per punt, with a career-long 53-yarder in the win against Tusculum. On 56 total punts, he pinned opponents inside their 20-yardline 14 times, had four punts of 50 yards or more, had six touchbacks and seven fair catches. His 40.3 yard average was the sixth-best in school history.
