Lady ‘Dogs defeat Mid-Carolina Rebels

NEWBERRY — Thursday night’s game in the Scott Gym featured only one lead change the whole game as the Newberry High Lady Bulldogs had the advantage from 5-4 over Mid-Carolina High School until the final buzzer in a 58-53 victory.

Newberry would lead 15-10 after the opening quarter and at the break, 38-20.

The Lady Rebels scored the first seven points of the second half which eventually grew to a 15-2 run as Newberry went from leading by 18 at the break to clinging to a four-point advantage eight minutes later, 45-41.

Leading by only three with under 20 seconds to go, Newberry’s Arnasia Boyd made a pass under the basket to senior Nala Moon. Moon, who had not made any points since the last meeting between the two schools, made it a two-possession game with her lay-up. Mid-Carolina was unable to make a basket before the final buzzer sounded.

Newberry won the bench scoring 27-13 as it is a regular tradition on the Lady Bulldogs’ senior night, all of the seniors started which included Moon, Shidedria Maybin and Mya Ruff.

Octavia Grandy had an evening high 18 points to lead the Newberry scoring, Tyshira Bates scored 15 while Boyd scored 12.

Fatima Sims scored seven points w hile Breanna Mathis, Moon and Ruff each scored two points as Newberry is now 12-8 on the season and finish 9-1 as the region champions. Newberry is 10-1 since Jan. 1.

Carli Ruff finished with a school-high 17 points for Mid-Carolina while Alexis Fowler scored 12.

Alix Green scored nine points while the Lady Rebel scoring continued with the six points apiece of Kelsey Bailey and Jalesa Ruff.

Julie Kinard scored two points while Janezshia Boyd hit a lone free-throw in the second quarter to end the Mid-Carolina scoring. Mid-Carolina falls to 9-9 on the season and finish 6-4 in the region.

Newberry’s Boyd, Bates and Grandy along with Mid-Carolina’s Fowler and Ruff scored in each of the four quarters of play during the game.

Newberry will host a first-round playoff game in Scott Gym on Tuesday. As a fourth seed, Mid-Carolina will travel on the same evening as Newberry.
