One person was killed in a Saturday night house fire in Newberry.

Jerry Wilson, 63, of 636 Hill St., Newberry, died at the scene due to carbon monoxide poisoning and extreme heat injuries, according to Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton.

The Newberry Fire Department was called to the scene around 1:15 a.m. yesterday.

Fire Chief Keith Minick said the fire was advanced when his crews arrived on the scene.

Joining the Newberry firefighters were crews from Friendly, Prosperity and other local fire departments, the Newberry County Rescue Squad, EMS and Newberry police.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and at press time had not been determined.

Minick says due to the severity of the fire, it is not known if the home had smoke detectors.

Only the front portion of the home was left standing after the blaze was put out, and the home was a total loss.

Firefighters, police and the coroner’s office are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, but no foul play is expected.

Minick says this is the second fire fatality in the city this month.

On Nov. 5, a woman was burned in a cooking incident on Azalea Street at Springfield Place, but little damage was done to the home. She later died at the Augusta Burn Center.

Wednesday night, firefighters responded to a kitchen fire on Pope Street.

Minick reminds residents with the holiday season and colder weather approaching to make sure smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in the home are operating correctly.
