If you are still contemplating putting another row of carrots in your garden, or spring fever carried you away and you planted more tomatoes than any one family can consume, go ahead, plant, water and be merry. You can grow your garden and grow Newberry at the same time.

The Farmers' Market is returning to Newberry County again this summer, and is putting down roots in a new spot. The market is moving downtown and to that we say “hurrah!” The market doesn't open until June 7, but thereafter will be gracing the grounds of Memorial Park every Saturday morning until mid-September.

There are a few needs to make this market an even bigger success than it has been in the past, and bring more foot traffic to downtown. First off, growers. The whole point of a farmers' market is to vend products where they are grown. So whether you have a larger operation, a truck garden, or a family garden gone mad-bring it on downtown-and share the joy of homegrown in your hometown. Secondly, buyers. This shouldn't be too terribly hard in an era of rising food costs coupled with rising concern about the safety of the products we buy from “away.”

Organizers are going the extra mile with the move, and are looking to also add in an every-varying community element each week. A yard or bake sale, or both, supporting different causes and groups would go along with the farmers' market weekly.

It's exactly those sorts of ideas that help get us really charged up about the idea of a farmers' market downtown. Picture neighbors, community members, people from out in the country and downtown walkups meeting, greeting and picking out their cantaloupes side by side. It doesn't get much more like a lemonade commercial than that-and who doesn't want to live in a lemonade commercial? Sign us up.
