COLD PREVENTION — Volunteer Donnie Layton helps sort coats given to warm needy bodies this winter.

With forecasters are hinting of a cold and wet winter, a top way to help locals in need is by donating coats, mittens, scarves and hats to the Keeping Newberry Warm Winter Coat Drive.
The drive is a partnership between the Newberry County Recreation Department, Newberry County YMCA, Newberry School Supply Organization and Pi Beta Omega Sorority.
The goal for the drive is to collect at least 200 coats for children of all ages.
The group is also collecting warm, winter blankets, said County Recreation Director Gerdi Lake.
Donors are encouraged to have gently used winter coats cleaned before donating them.
“Many times children outgrow their winter coats before the coat is worn,“ said Lake. “ My hope is that parents will consider donating the coats rather than allowing them to simply take up space in an attic or closet. We genuinely want to do everything we can as a partner in our communities. It is our ultimate goal to make sure that everyone who needs a warm winter coat this season has one. We need a program like this because economic times are affecting a lot of our own citizens. It is our community helping our community.“
Donated items can be taken by Monday to the Newberry County Annex at 1309 College St. in Newberry, the Newberry County YMCA on Old Jolly Street Road in Newberry and the Prosperity Town Center in Prosperity.
