NEWBERRY —The world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra swings into Newberry for a big band performance Jan. 13 at 3 p.m.

For one magical evening, the orchestra will transport the Newberry Opera House audience back to the 1940s, playing Miller’s hit tunes in the authentic sound of the orchestra’s heyday. The band’s repertoire now exceeds 1,700 compositions that keep the band popular with both young and old.

Nick Hilscher, bandleader, is certain to bring enthusiasm, authenticity and elegance to the most popular and beloved swing band in the world.

Hilscher says, “Been listening to Glenn Miller and his orchestra play the hits. Man, that band could swing. No wonder it hit me like a ton of bricks, knocked me out, and changed my life when I was 11. I’d never heard anything like that kind of music. It hit me at the deepest level a kid at that age could be hit.”

Hilsher has been a repeat performer with the Glenn Miller Orchestra for more then 15 years and is excited about assuming the role of bandleader.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the premiere big band in the world and is on the road 48 weeks out of 52 and travel over a hundred-thousand miles a year. Performing 300 live shows a year, to an audience of more then half-million people annually.

The orchestra has its own distinctive sound. That sound is created by the clarinet holding the melodic line, doubled or coupled with the tenor sax playing the same notes, and the harmonies produced by three other saxophones, while growling trombones and wailing trumpets add their ooh-ahs.

The music is a mixture that just doesn’t die rather it ages gracefully with years. Performing such major hits as: In the Mood, Chattanooga Choo Choo, String of Pearls, and Tuxedo Junction. The music of Glenn Miller is as American as apple pie and baseball. The sound lives on forever.

Relive the music of your life on Sunday afternoon, Jan.13 at 3 p.m.
