NEWBERRY — Five young people have been charged with robbing a person riding a bicycle.

Just before 11 p.m. the group robbed the person riding a bike on Louis Rich Road.

A nearby Newberry Police officer was able to respond to the scene quickly and detain three of the five suspects, said Newberry Police Captain Kevin Atkins.

Two other suspects fled on foot and with the help of Newberry County Sheriff’s deputies were arrested.

Ricky Jovan Caughman, 19, of Chapin; Devante Shaquille Davenport, 18, of Newberry; and Cedric Lopaze Ruff, 19, also of Newberry, were arrested and charged with armed robbery, criminal conspiracy, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Caughman was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Also two juveniles each under the age of 16 have been detained in the case and face charges.

All three adults remain in jail at the Newberry County Detention Center.
