NEWBERRY — Firefighters across the county will spend the week doing fire prevention activities and end the week with a parade on Saturday.

The parade will kick off at 11 a.m. and head down Main Street from Calhoun to Nance street.

Each of the county’s fire and rescue squads has been asked to put equipment into the parade. Law enforcement, the S.C. Forestry Commission and other first responders will also join in.

After the parade there will be games and demonstrations on the square that promote fire prevention.

Also, the Newberry City Fire Department has hosted a coloring contest where all school age children have submitted their works of arts to be judged.

There will be a winner from each of the elementary and middle schools in the county and the winning works of art will be on display on the square.

The parade will end fire prevention week and starting on Monday, area firefighters will go out to day cares, schools and other organizations promoting fire safety.

Also after the parade, firefighters will be available to discuss volunteer and career opportunities in the fire service for anyone who is interested.
