NEWBERRY — Newberry Academy junior Jacob Epting smashed the school’s single-game, three-point record, hitting 10 three-point shots, and helped the Eagles claim a win in their region basketball opener, 87 – 58.
The Lady Eagles did not treat the visiting Glenforest team any better, winning in a rout, 62 – 17.
The Lady Eagles opened Tuesday night with a 14-2 advantage after the first period and never looked back. Substituting freely, the Academy went into the half up 29-9.
The second half was just as easy for the home team as they cruised to an easy win. The Lady Eagles were led by Andie Getz with 16 points, Carman Franklin added 9 points, and Emma Lindsay, Rachel Franklin and Charlotte Carulli each added 8 points.
Leigha Harbert had 4 points, while Amanda Crayne had 3 points. Alyssia Skipper, Emily Senn and Kaitlyn Nobles each added 2 points. Every player for the Lady Eagles scored.
In the boys’ game, Epting hit his first three-point attempt, which should have sent a warning to Glenforest, but the visiting team went basket for basket with the Eagles.
Newberry Academy was down by one, 20-19 after the first period. The Eagles picked up the intensity, and played their best basketball of the year in the second period. Epting hit 4 three-point baskets in the period, and Alex Cole added one as well to compliment the outside scoring, and Dylan Skipper took over the inside game, scoring 6 points. Newberry outscored Glenforest 27-6 in the period, and the Eagles never let up, pulling away in the second half.
Epting essentially finished his scoring in the third period, ending up with 36 points on the night. Skipper added 18 and Justin Suber had 13 points for the night. Other players to score for Newberry included Jake Buzhardt with 5 points, CJ Connelly and Sean Blanton with 4 points, Cole with 3 points, and Ryan Smith with 2 points.
Both teams from Newberry Academy will be in action Saturday at Hammond in Columbia.
