With the regular season rushing towards the end, Newberry Academy finished the week on a strong note.
On Jan.15, the Academy traveled to Columbia to face Covenant Christian School, and all four teams won.
The middle school girls won 30-10, led by Alysia Skipper with 12 points.
The middle school boys won 31-12 and were led by Daniel Bannister with 10 points.
The varsity girls won 35-23, led by Kaitlyn Nobles with 16 points.
The varsity boys completed the sweep against Covenant with a convincing 68-51 win.
The Eagles were led by Justin Suber with 15 points. Three other players were in double figures including Dylan Skipper with 14 points, Ryan Smith with 12 points and Jacob Epting with 11 points.
On Friday, the teams returned to Columbia to face Glenforest, and all three teams in action returned home with a win.
The middle school boys raced to a 48-16 victory, powered by 21 points from Landen York.
The varsity squads also won in lopsided fashion, as the Lady Eagles won 63–22, and the boys won 70-47.
The Lady Eagles opened an early 10 point lead and cruised to a 28-5 lead at the half.
Academy coach Travis Gilliam substituted freely in the second half and the team easily won an important region game.
Andie Getz led all scorers with 24 points. Leigha Harbert and Nobles each added seven points, while Alysia Skipper and Carman Franklin each added six points. Senior Charlotte Carulli dropped in five points, while teammates Rachel Franklin and Emma Lindsay added three points each. Amanda Crayne scored two points.
The varsity girls’ record stands at 8-10 overall, with an 8-2 region record.
With only four region games remaining, the Lady Eagles are still hoping for a strong finish and a place in the region and state tournaments.
The varsity boys also routed Glenforest, pushing a 10 points first quarter lead to 38-17 at the half.
Coach Scott Gardner also leaned heavily on his bench in the second half as the Eagles cruised to a comfortable win.
The boys were led by Epting with 21 points. Dylan Skipper dropped in 17 points, while Suber added 14 points.
Ryan Smith continued his strong play with six points, and CJ Connelly added four points. A host of players scored two points, including Tyler French, Sean Blanton, and seniors Alex Cole and Jake Buzhardt.
The Eagles’ record stands at 11-8 overall, and 7-3 in the region.
Newberry Academy will be at home against Mead Hall on Thursday and a crucial region matchup at King on Friday.
