The proclamation encourages the public to support and increase their involvement with the 500,000 South Carolina citizens who are impacted by severe lifelong disabilities regardless of their race, culture, geography, age, sex or economic class.

The disability proclamation includes those with mental retardation and related disabilities along with those with autism, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injuries.

The disabilities month is celebrated statewide the partnership between people with and without disabilities and the increasing involvement of people with disabilities in education, employment and community activities.

“Thank you for your respect and allowing us to be apart of the community,” said advocate Carla Creekmore before a packed crowd last week in the county council chambers.

“Thank you for your support and for supporting us,” added Connie Coleman, a leader in the county advocacy board known as the Ruth Pugh Foundation.
