With top 10 hits including “Fishin’ in the Dark” and “Mr. Bojangles,” platinum and gold records, and multiple Grammy awards and nominations, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been a pillar of country rock for decades.
The NGDB consists of: Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, Bob Carpenter and John McEuen.
The iconic and profoundly influential Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in country rock and American roots music, continues to add to their legendary status.
Their groundbreaking “Will the Circle be Unbroken” album has been inducted into the U.S. Library of Congress as well as the Grammy Hall of Fame. NGDB’s recording of “Mr. Bojangles” was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010
Even though the multi award winning “Fishin’ in the Dark” was released by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1987, it stands as a testament to the lifestyle that country musicians still love to sing about today.
The song tells the story of a couple contemplating a nighttime fishing trip, where they can relax in the country and count the stars.
This addition to the top 100 country songs list was Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s third number 1 single. It topped country charts in both the U.S. and Canada.
The song continues to be a classic country mainstay — even Garth Brooks covered “Fishin’ in the Dark” for his “The Lost Sessions” album.
A number of artists from other genres recorded their version of the song, as well – a true tribute to this legendary band
