A protest has been filed in the Newberry County Council District 1 election.

The protest claims that in some precincts that more votes were cast on Nov. 6 than the number of voters signed up to have voted at the polling place according to sources.

In the race Scott Cain won by 1,141 votes to Tim Carroll’s 1,078 votes or by 63 votes.

Cain had won the Republican primary and defeated incumbent Edgar Baker. Carroll ran as a Democratic and is the mayor of Whitmire.

The Newberry County Voter Registration and Elections Board will be holding a hearing about the results on Monday at noon at their offices at 1927 Wilson Road in Newberry.
